Unique Approach

Fun with music

We are a musical family. We hope to share our knowledge to guide others in their musical journey and making music lessons accessible.

I learned how to play the drums from my Uncle and the piano from my Grand-Aunt when I was about 7 years old. However, my piano lessons were too boring so I always ended up in tears during home practice. I eventually managed to convince my mom to let me quit.

However, my passion for music didn’t go away. Growing up, I played different instruments in school bands, played the guitar in Church youth groups, and sang in choirs. I even got to perform in Carnegie Hall in high school. When I became interested in playing the piano again in high school, I wasn’t able to take any lessons because they were too expensive for my family. So I taught myself how to play music that I like through books.

When I tried to teach my kids how to play the piano, I quickly realized that when it’s not fun for them, they lose their interest pretty quickly. So I tried to come up with different ways to entice them so that they’ll stay interested and practice willingly. I learned that they have to like the music and the lessons have to be fun and engaging. I’m pleasantly surprised to see them learn much faster that way too!

One thing leads to another and now I’ve been teaching a number of my kids’ friends and neighbor kids how to play the piano and guitar for over 4 years. My main focus is to teach my students how to play the music that they enjoy while having fun in holistic music education. My goal is to have them love music for life!

I left my Software Engineering job back in 2014 to stay home with my 3 kids. Now, I’m in the Associate Degree program in Music Performance at my local community college.

Holistic Music Education

In addition to learning just the tip of the iceberg in music education, which is how to play the instrument and read music, I also cover the following skills in my private and group lessons. I pull materials and teaching techniques from multiple method books and sources that best suit my students' needs and learning styles. We play some classical music in our lessons and a lot of contemporary, pop and jazz music.

Our children have taken piano lessons in the past from certified instructors and while they were beneficial, the decision to move forward with Sayuri proved to be rewarding on many levels. Within the first few lessons, both our children were enthusiastic about the new music and are excited to practice. As their parents, it is rewarding to see how committed they both are to achieving at the highest level and wanting to do so on their own. Additionally, my husband is again learning to play the guitar and I’m focusing on the ukulele. Music is an important part of our family and we have Sayuri to thank for that. She translates beautiful music to all ages.
